Autographed Antique Book 1942 Yearbook RARE Dominican College of San Rafael The Firebrand

The Dominican College of San Rafael School Yearbook 1942

Veratis Fax Ardens

The Firebrand

175 Pages, Dated 1942

For anyone searching their family history, or for someone who just enjoys reading, this is a wonderful treasure.

Founded in 1890 as Dominican College, Dominican is one of the oldest universities in California.
1917 – Dominican became the first Catholic college in California to grant the bachelor’s degree to women.

Contains genuine real photographs of the students. The photographs of the graduating class are actual black and white photographs glued to the pages, all are clean, not smudged and intact.

Photos and tipped-in illustrations (a sheet or sheets which were not part of the press impression, are added at a later stage by dabbing minute amounts of glue onto the edge or corners of the sheet to be pasted into the book (for example, color plates or errata sheets)

This wonderful book reads like an autographed biography or novel, with stories of the students, the meadow lands of the school and the library containing ancient scrolls in cases.
The chapters are written by different classmates or perhaps the teachers, most dated '40 or '41

The inside cover has a printed bookplate that features a banner than reads "EXLIBRIS" 1850-1939, and handwritten at the bottom the name : Peggy Juers (last name illegible, but looks like "Juers" ?)

"Peggy" must not have been part of the graduating class, as there is no photo of a "peggy"
There are numerous personal messages from schoolmates, to Peggy both on the inside front page(s) and back cover, many say that they will miss her next year, and to have good luck "in the big city".

175 pages, plus two blank pages at the end that contain numerous yearbook signings, and personal notes to "Peggy".
Pages 157-160 were not cut apart, when the book was bound, and remain folded together at the outer edge.
The binding is firm, and at certain points in the book are the end edges of pages (aprox 1/4") protruding from the binding, as though the book was bound by hand folding pages back and forth, and some pages being single were bound with this partial page protruding from the binding. The edges of the pages are not straight cut, but uneven as if torn at the edges to separate the folded pages after being bound.

Photos of the Graduating class includes; "Roberta Breen, Loisann Brichetto, Gloria Buchignani, Janice Byrne, Merry Carlton, (yes it is spelled Merry), Mary Cavanaugh,Janice Chargin,Violette Chasseur, Elizabeth De Lorimier, Rosemary Friedenbach, Catherine Geary, Irma Gille,Kathleen Hall, Mary Helfrich, Virginia Howell,Hanoria McCarthy, Janet Munsun, Betty O'reilly, Relina Puppo, Patricia Ryan, Veronica Shannon, Winfred Schwarz, Helen Thompson, Ruth Widenmann, Barbara Woodhead.
After each photograph page, there is a one or two page "article" about that person, which includes personal observations and opinions, written almost like a novel, describing a new character.

Of "Virginia Howell" they wrote: "Flaming hair, very white skin, tilted nose, a whimsical smile-and elfin face. A slight figure that seems made for the graceful dance in which she delights, a physical grace which is equaled by her skill in the arts.

Of "Patricia Ryan" they wrote: " Pat's green eyes shine with "little girl" eagerness, and her charming smile gives one a glad feeling. One notices first that she has a slight build, after that, the freshness and eagerness of her full-tone voice. Serious and gay she enthusiastically turns the business of life into into a game and approaches her play with level seriousness. A fine tennis player, she makes a point of returning every ball and that is just the way she works in all activities.
One I found to be quite interesting was that of
"Ruth Widenmann" they write: " Tall, slim Ruth wear clothes strikingly. With as artists discrimination she has decided that classic sports outfits are her forte and she looks a designers dream of the American girl.

A three page chapter titled "The Juniors", written by Anne Smith '40, Lists some of the sophomores, including: Pat Bannan, and Sue Seil (president and Vice President of the WWA) "who revived the old idea of circus under Miss Millette's direction." It also states in this chapter that " Although Juniors as a whole are often accused of lacking interest in study, over one-fifth of the class members are Gamma Sigma, the honor society."and that "For the first time in many years JANE CRAWFORD  is the editor of the firebrand."

This book makes for delightful reading as there are students personal accounts of various activities, including a Circus Event, and a story of the Freshmen getting their own "house" that year, not having to stay in the "Fanjeau house" with the Seniors and other class-men.

The chapter titled: " Author's Husband" speaks of his wife "Emily" (who is working on another Novel), and how shocked he was after reading one of her books (Romance in Pastelle) that he was not only the lead male character, but that she also used his name, and was very upset that she used his words that he said when he asked Emily to marry him.

CONDITIONExcellent condition for its age. Please look at photos closely.  Photos are attached firmly to the pages. Real photographs are secured to pages at centers, so edges lift slightly.  Spine is tight. Very minor signs of wear on edges

We are not quite sure how we came to have this book, it might have been passed down from a distant relative, or a gift from a friend, but it has been treasured and well cared for.
