Looming enhancements to search

Looming enhancements to search

In the next night or so we’ll be making some enhancements to how our keyword search and filtering & narrowing links function.

The most significant change involves allowing one to apply multiple filters at a time. For example, right now if you want to view a single color or brand you can do so by filtering out all other colors or brands. However, this means you can only view one color or brand at a time. If you want to view purple and green at the same time you’re out of luck. Our enhanced search will let you choose multiple attributes to filter on; allowing you to view multiple colors, brands, or nearly any other product attribute in groups. We think this change will better empower shoppers to find the right options for them.

Most of the other changes are cosmetic. We are removing the status bar across the top that reiterates any active filters as those will be more strongly represented in the enhanced 'rail' of search tools along the left side of the page. This nicely de-clutters the page so we can get your products higher up. Additionally, we made some subtle changes to the look of the search page to more accurately reflect our revised header and let the items, and not the tools, 'pop' more on the page.

We are not changing how search results are determined.

We expect the updated search page to go live Tuesday or Wednesday evening. I’ll update the blog once our changes are live.

Questions welcome!

Just so everyone knows.. will there be periodic slow downs on the site during this change? Thanks

alexwberg says: 04/25/11 at 12:46:33

We expect slow downs to be minimal for this particular deployment, but we will deploy later in the evening (PST time) to mitigate any potential impact.

I have struggled looking for 80’s clothing… and wish searches were more favorable to those words.

Is this part of the changes/improvements meaning deeper searches based on my chosen words?

There aren’t any changes to the way search results are determined so your particular search will return the same results as before.

Though if you check the box to include searching the description (in refine your search) you might find improved results (and that feature exists now).

Slightly off topic: when you search below the ‘People’ page, it STILL says “in a Bonanza” or some such thing. Poof!

Very much off topic: will there be an option to have Clippy help us search?

alexwberg says: 04/25/11 at 18:16:06

Clippy has, sadly, been retired. We’re a little shook up about it still. ; )

“looming” well, that sounds ominous

Thanks for the heads up, Alex.

“deployment” interesting word choice :o)

de·ploy (d-ploi)
v. de·ployed, de·ploy·ing, de·ploys
v.tr.
1.
a. To position (troops) in readiness for combat, as along a front or line.
b. To bring (forces or material) into action.
c. To base (a weapons system) in the field.
2. To distribute (persons or forces) systematically or strategically.
3. To put into use or action: “Samuel Beckett’s friends suspected that he was a genius, yet no one knew . . . how his abilities would be deployed” (Richard Ellmann).

This is good news for me while searching items. I always hate that I have to clear filters so I can search for another size, color, etc.
This will make it easier for all of our customers too!!

Texas_Treasured_Soap says: 04/26/11 at 08:56:30

Awwwww Clippy didn’t work long enough to earn a pension… forever retired? :(

Thanks Alex for your response to my original question…much appreciated.

Thanks for the update, Alex. It sounds like it may be easier without having to fart around clearing filters.

Thanks for the heads up Alex.

Though I am still not understanding the newest change to Bonanza… all I know is that when I look for coin coupons there is no longer a coins section, coins & paper money are lost amungst all the collectibles ( I’m NOT a happy camper about this at all because my coins are lost amongst the growing number of other coin sellers here) And I haven’t had a sale since September of 2010… I’m tossing around the idea of becomming a plus member but Ebay took all my $…
I’m just not feeling the Bonanzle Love!

I am not going to get excited until I see if it actually is any better. It would be nice to be able to use parenthesis like we can on another site to search for, example:
blue denim skirt (hippie,boho,western) -(straight,stretch)
That example would bring up anything with the words hippie, boho or western in the title and leave out anything with the words straight or stretch in the title. Searching like that can quickly narrow things down, even after the other filters for size, color, etc.

With this change, we will sell a lot more looms!

Bighorsecoins says: 04/26/11 at 15:46:04

I’m with CoinsYouWant on this one.
It really doesnt matter what looming enhancements or other bells and whistles you are creating if we are getting 0 buyers, 0 views.
If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around does it make a noise??
If you keep making enhancements and there is no traffic to see it does it matter?
Definately not feeling the Bonanza love here either.

Looming enchancements = oxymoron

sparklemotion says: 04/26/11 at 22:25:08

Lo! Search enhancements are nigh upon us!

Sounds good to me.

AbbysAttic says: 04/27/11 at 05:44:39

Putting my “vote” in for an option to remove words from a search like Indizona says.

I periodically search for Lladros, but I’m not interested in Nao. I’d love to be able to search “Lladro -Nao”.

bonanzamark says: 04/27/11 at 09:53:46

@Indizona @ abbysattic, our main search uses (and will continue to use) the Boolean search logic So any word that follows a “-” (minus sign) will be excluded from search. So in example, if you search for “12 Romance Novels” then the items will show. However if you search for “12-Romance -Novels” our search will only search for 12 because your minus sign excluded all terms that followed the minus sign from search.

EclecticStuff says: 04/27/11 at 13:30:12

Thanks for the Boolean link, Mark [and thanks for the “live” link, too!]. First I have seen it explained, and very easy to follow.

(Wish we could go back to live links …esp in our Booth Facts page where I had links to the USPS calculator, etc.)
