The checkout redesign is live

Hi everyone – we just launched our shopping cart and checkout overall.

Our goals with the checkout redesign are three-fold.  We want to reduce errors and confusion, make the look and feel more consistent with the rest of the site, and improve our ability to remarket to previous customers.  For more details please check out this post detailing the redesign goals.  Also, for those of you with a PayPal account type of ‘personal,’ please read more about changing your PayPal account status.

In addition to redesigning virtually every page of our cart, we also did a head to toe overhaul of many of our transaction related emails.  The new emails also have an improved visual design and stronger calls-to-action that should make next steps clearer for buyers.

We suspect there just might be a bug or two that we’ll need to address.  So please be as specific as possible when reporting any problems to the support team.  If you have feedback we’d love to hear that too.  Just please be sure to add your supporting rationale and any suggestions as appropriate.

Thanks very much!

So far love it!

alexwberg says: 02/08/11 at 22:49:13

@fuzzlebutts – thanks! We’re still tweaking a thing here or there if the site slows down for a second.

fuzzlebutts says: 02/08/11 at 22:50:50

no changes have to be made for shipping profiles right? Off to bed! Mary

alexwberg says: 02/08/11 at 22:52:06

@fuzzlebutts – correct. We did not mess with shipping profiles. Sleep well!

Hi Alex,

I was playing to see what at least part of the cart looked like and I think the part of the cart that shows payment options is clear and very good BUT when I emptied my cart, it showed a row of 4 (I think) items from the sellers booth who I was shopping in which is a good idea BUT it also had a row that was titled – Items from Featured Bonanza Sellers.

I completely disagree with pulling potential buyers away from the booth in which they are in with other sellers items. This could likely cause the potential buyer to leave the booth they started out in for some other seller.

Cross promotion is ok but please, can it be of the items from the booth they are shopping in and drop the other sellers items?

Edited to add, could the little gray X to remove items be red instead? The gray doesn’t stand out very well.

Thanks!

bizzysplace says: 02/09/11 at 01:39:25

Looks GREAT! My only suggestion is like GrandmasPantry – if y’all could change the grey circled ‘x’ to a grey circled RED ‘x’, that would be marvelous! Buyers like to know that they have the option to remove and the way it is now, is a tad difficult to read.

Either a red ‘x’ or perhaps a checkbox and an ‘update’ button would work as well.

ATCC says: 02/09/11 at 03:42:05

I have to agree with the gray “x”. If you want to avoid confusion a red “x” or “remove” could be used. Otherwise it looks great!

AntiquesRGreat says: 02/09/11 at 05:02:56

Alex seems like the new cart is bringing up old offers. Please read thread:

http://www.bonanza.com/forums/9/topics/151143?page=1#posts-2131693

Other than that I like it

divinefabricsnmore says: 02/09/11 at 05:09:26

Alex, Thanks so much for the UPDATE, but this morn, an OLD offer of mine also showed up, but not only that, ITEMS from that offer CAME BACK to my Booth, despite the fact those ITEMS were SOLD OUT! Yikes! LOL! Well, Cool New Cart, but Glitches happened, methinks! Thanks again! I know all will work out!

iluvmypet says: 02/09/11 at 05:09:49

Look great! But I also don’t like the row of “Featured Bonanza Sellers”… feels like that other place..eek!

And I also noticed if you add an item, go the Cart and Delete the item…. you then land on a page that says “Your cart is empty” (No way to go back to the booth you were shopping in) and shows items NOT from the booth – Newly Listed Items – Items from Featured Bonanza Sellers, items not even remotely related to the booth they came from. Buyers shopping for pet stuff are unlikely to be shopping for a $350 watch or a $50 Crib Set. There should be a link to at least go back the original booth OR show Shop By Category like on the Home page.

Just my two cents.

therainforest says: 02/09/11 at 05:38:25

Please elaborate on the cross-promotion thing — TIA

Rods_Books says: 02/09/11 at 06:07:10

Also had an old offer show up from May of ‘09……….
Along with others above, don’t particularly like the reference to Featured Sellers – wouldn’t like to loose a potential buyer once they are in my booth………….

SensualPleasures says: 02/09/11 at 07:33:13

Had someone try to get a Freebie from my place this morning but it told them they had to make an offer of at least $0.01. When they tried to do so, they still could not get the item. First of all my freebies are just that “FREE”, why would bonz tell they anything different? Have never had this problem before so I am sure it has something to do with the new cart. :(

I also do not like the row that was titled – Items from Featured Bonanza Sellers. That is my checkout…not the whole worlds checkout. jmo

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 07:33:44

@ grandmaspantry, iluvmypet, and therainforest – I’ll look into the rules that govern the cross promotion area when the cart is empty and get back to you. Right now we are prioritizing fixes. Thanks for the feedback.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 07:38:39

@antiquesaregreat, divinefabricsandmore, rod3955 – we are looking into old offers appearing. Thank you for the feedback and patience.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 07:47:57

Regarding the grey x to remove items: we like it’s placement and color.

It is in the standard area for the removal action and is discoverable enough without being red and distracting from other calls to action – like those nice PayPal and Google Check buttons we want people to use.

If we find it is an issue in usability testing we will adjust it.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 07:48:46

@SensualPleasures – there were no intended changes with regards to Freebies that I am aware of, but we will look into it.

Whispering_Willows says: 02/09/11 at 07:50:15

Maybe you guys are trying to drum up old business.LOL

Should we just cancel them? or wait until you fix this?

Frolicnymph says: 02/09/11 at 08:08:28

Thanks for the work ALL of you have done and continue to do to improve Bonanza. I agree about the X needs to be Red and maybe a prompt of some kind next to the X….“Delete Item”?

Is there any way to add Money Order as a option under PP or GC? As is there is already a line of Text: Payment Options. Buyer has to click. Why not just add Money Order under PP and GC?

I also agree with the ..NO way to return to Booth once a item is Deleted. Can we get a Return to Booth in there somewhere?

Don’t like the advertising of others when a potential buyer is navigating around my Booth/items.

Otherwise..I think it looks clean and easy to make payment selection.

johngermaine says: 02/09/11 at 08:28:40

I don’t care for the look of the message I get when I have an offer. It’s not complete. It should have the info that pertains to the exact offer such as: what the exact dollar figure of the item was and what the current offer is. I get your notification and then go to My Bonz and view it from Open Negotiations so I can figure it all out. This info should be right in that email so we can deal with the offer quickly instead of having to run all over to figure it out. I have more than 1300 items in my booth and there is no way I can recall off the top of my head what the original listing price most of them was. If I could click from that email and accept that offer as I should be able to, it would make things easier and much more sensible.

Whispering_Willows says: 02/09/11 at 08:36:55

Your right, the offers looks nothing like the actual offer and you can’t go to the offer from that email, Only to the item page.I use to say “See offer” not anymore,Unless it changed yesterday,Not complaining, just stating the facts

The except button should say “Review order”

SensualPleasures says: 02/09/11 at 08:50:31

Posted screenshots under Seller Discussions if you want a peek

I respectfully request that if item is removed from cart that the following screen showing newly listed items by other sellers and featured sellers be removed. I struggle to get my own items noticed and advertised, I do not want to advertise all newly listed items nor the featured sellers. To me that is favoritism to those paying a membership. This is exactly what Ebay did and it killed many sellers! Please work with us on that

froggieb says: 02/09/11 at 10:15:23

I already submitted this but last night, or early this morning depending on your time zone, I made a couple of purchases and paid using paypal. When I finished I went to PayPal to look up an purchase my DH made and found that I was still logged in even though the transactions were completed and I had been returned to Bonanza. I don’t like the idea of my paypal acct staying logged in!

I guess I’m mentioning this for the rest of you so that if you feel like me on this issue you can go and log out of paypal when you finish with your purchase!

Paceset9999 says: 02/09/11 at 10:53:38

Could you Possibly make the MAKE AN OFFER button BIGGER? Please? I’ve been here 2 1/2 years and have had to tell 99% of new buyers and many other sellers that are buying, where the button is.

AdventuresAndHobbies says: 02/09/11 at 10:53:43

I just tested the checkout and when I emptied out the cart, I was very sad to see that it then takes you away from the original seller’s booth and displays New Listed and Featured Sellers items. And to make it worse, the items bear absolutely no relation to the item I originally placed in my cart.

Here are my concerns on this:

1.It makes no sense at all from a buyer’s standpoint. If I’m looking at item A, why would I be offered items B, C, C, etc that are totally unrelated? And if I came to XYZ Booth to shop, why make it difficult to get back to that booth?

2. It makes no sense at all from a seller’s standpoint. If I have been able to attract a potential buyer to my booth (from Google Shopping, my website, my blogs, etc), why would I want to make it difficult for the possible buyer to stay in MY booth?

I hope that this is resolved by:

1. Only showing the original booth’s items as possible other items the buyer might want to add to the cart. Get rid of the links to Newly Listed and Featured Sellers.

2. Redirect the buyer back to the original booth.

I realize that there are going to be bugs with a significant site change like this, but I hope this gets corrected real soon. This is one of the reasons I soured on selling/buying on eBay and I would hate to see Bonanza move in this direction.

Please don’t think that I am absolutely against the new checkout. There are a lot of things I like about the new checkout, but these are a few aspects I don’t think are good and need to be re-thought.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 11:09:26

@antiquesaregreat, divinefabricsandmore, rod3955 – offers older than one month should now no longer show in the cart. In the next few days we’ll add a link to hide offers in the cart.

Thanks for your patience.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 11:16:34

@johngermaine – thanks for the feedback. The email is indeed not as complete as all of the information on My Bonanza screens.

Getting all of the information parsed out correctly in the email proved very difficult, but since most of the actions you take appear on the site we went with the topline information for the emails.

AbbysAttic says: 02/09/11 at 11:22:54

A comment about the grey x, if I may. If the removal X is red, it certainly stands out more and may “encourage” buyers to remove the item from the cart. In addition, individuals who are color blind have so many problems with red and green that websites should be procluded from using those colors for action links. My hubby is color blind and I can’t tell you how frustrating it is for him when he can’t figure out which button to click because they both look the same to him.

Regarding what items show up…I think there should be a way for the buyer to easily return to that booth. If other items are “offered” via newly listed or featured sellers, I think they should be in the same vein as what was just purchased. For example, if I just bought a piece of Lladro, it shows I’m interested in Lladro. So, show me some more. Don’t show me shoes. So go ahead and offer newly listed items and feature seller items, in addition to items in that seller’s both, but make certain those items are ones I may be interested in. Otherwise, I’m not sure it’s a help.

bizzysplace says: 02/09/11 at 11:54:36

Hmm on the “Regarding the grey x to remove items: we like it’s placement and color”…very well then guess that’s the end of discussion eh? No offense Alex, but since joining ebay here – err…ummm “Bonz” I meant, quite a few have begun to feel like sheep and Bonz in the shepherd (kind of sounds like the dark side eh?) or have closed up shop here and moved altogether.

Continue on comrade Alex as I will – selling what I can here on Bonz, I’ll offer no advice or suggestions and put my effort in on my website and highwire store.

froggieb says: 02/09/11 at 11:57:23

Oh I do agree with abbysattic. I knew a gal who had some vision defect where she couldn’t see red at all, it just looked black. Now in her case this wouldn’t be a problem but colors on the web are very important.

SensualPleasures says: 02/09/11 at 12:01:10

Alex the problm with freebies has to come from the new checkout as I have not had this problem before. Here is a link to the thread I started regarding this and a screen shot of what my customers are seeing when they go to checkout with the free item.
http://www.bonanza.com/forums/1/topics/151199?page=1#posts-2132377

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 12:24:21

@SensualPleasures – yes I believe Mark addressed that issue in the forum. It’s marked as the official response so it is easy to find.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 12:42:12

Thanks for the feedback regarding the empty cart states.

First, no merchandising was lost. Our old version of the empty cart was just that – empty. There was a text link to the ‘Buy’ page and that’s it. With the new cart there are a range of possibilities when it is emptied of items. If a user was signed in then they will see up to three recently viewed items plus two newly listed items in the first row. If one of your items was recently viewed it will appear there. The second row shows some merchandising for premium members. I’ll see what I can do about swapping out the newly listed items for items from the seller’s booth. This would mean all of the first row could be the last seller’s items if they were viewed, but no matter what at least some of them will be.

Second, it’s important to note that our new receipt page, the last page in our new checkout flow, merchandises items from the seller’s booth more prominently already. All of you might not have seen this as I suspect you didn’t buy anything from yourself when you were checking out the new cart. ; ) Right under the receipt information (price, confirmation message, etc) is a row of ‘More items like what you purchased’ – and those items are from the same seller’s booth.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 13:28:05

@bizzysplace – please do continue to make suggestions. I think we have a track record of responding well to merchant requests, but from time to time we are bound to disagree. And like I said, if we find the removal of items as is presents a problem in usability tests we will address it. That’s why we test.

AntiquesRGreat says: 02/09/11 at 14:18:25

Alex I have a suggestion at checkout at the top where it says:

Ordering from Paceset9999 Puget Sound, WA

Instead of that link taking the buyer to the sellers profile page can it revert back to the sellers booth?

Gladys

cshort0319 says: 02/09/11 at 14:29:50

Alex,in my opinion, it is absolutely inappropriate to refer someone from my site to someone else’s without my consent — which I would not give. On the site which shall be nameless, one has the ability to opt out of this program. We should have the same choice here.

MyTexasTreasures says: 02/09/11 at 14:35:21

Alex, when a customer checks out, in my booth, a box pops up asking for a zip code for shipping. I have flat rate shipping quoted, thus this should not appear. When they check out it shows FREE shipping, which I cannot afford to do. Also, a box appears that says the item must be submitted to the seller for approval, before it can be purchased. Please help. I do not use best offer. I cannot go back to a buyer, once they have paid for an item, and ask for them to pay shipping, if Bonanza shows free shipping.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 14:47:02

@AntiquesRGreat – good suggestion. I’ll get that resolved.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 14:52:12

@cshort – I’m confused. We aren’t referring anyone from your booth to someone else’s. There were no changes to booth pages.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 14:53:18

@MyTexasTreasures – send me a bmail of one of your items where this occurs so I can take a look.

GrandmasPantry says: 02/09/11 at 15:14:23

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 15:24:34

Here’s a screenshot of a receipt page from someone buying items from me. As you can see the items merchandised in the first row are items in my booth. This is a test order in case you are wondering about the address and email addy.

thebgs says: 02/09/11 at 15:39:06

I just clicked on the “view packing slip” link from a completed transaction. I use the resulting page to print a packing slip to include in my packages. The page is now harder to read. The shipping amount and discounts are no longer lined up well. There is also a drop-down box to select the country to which the order will ship, and that does not need to be there for a completed transaction for which the buyer has already paid.

Additionally, there is a link on that page to “update saved addresses.” That link ends up printing on the package slip, and this also makes it harder to read. Furthermore, that link takes me to a page for me to change my shipping address as though I am the buyer, when I am the seller and am not the person who made the purchase. It makes no sense.

I’m just passing this on so that you can look into it.

Paceset9999 says: 02/09/11 at 15:39:19

so Alex, I like that page after checkout…but about that Make An Offer button…Please address my suggestion about making it bigger, if you would…please

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 15:50:26

@thebqs – thanks for the heads-up. We’ll take a look at it. Specifics are very helpful so, again, thank you. ; )

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 15:52:02

@Pacerset9999 – we are looking at different ways to promote offers; perhaps even from the item detail page. If the new cart makes the offer process less confusing we’ll be more comfortable promoting it a little more heavily.

EclecticStuff says: 02/09/11 at 17:19:23

I agree with those who do not want to see cross-promotion prior to the finalization of a sale. I opted out of it from the git-go with the “dark side”. I opted out of ALL cross-promotion before and after a sale. I think there should be an option.

alexwberg says: 02/09/11 at 17:41:36

@EclecticStuff – there is no cross promotion prior to sale during the checkout flow.

There is some if the shopping cart is empty and some on the receipt page, but nothing if the seller actively has one of your items in the cart.

CritterCreekRanch says: 02/09/11 at 17:52:02

I purchased 2 items today from 2 different sellers, one was a GCO the other via Paypal, it went smoothly and I do like the staus bar it shows where I am and checkout seemed quicker, I purchase quite often on Bonanza so as a buyer I think the new checkout is a great improvement! JMHO

GrandmasPantry says: 02/09/11 at 18:21:19

The cross promo of other sellers items when a buyer empties their cart by manually removing the items they placed in it – usually due to a mind change for whatever reason, should not be there. There should be a link to go back to the sellers booth to see what it is they would rather purchase. If they intend to buy something else from someone else, they can do a new search if they really want to leave the sellers booth or want to find something else. That is how I see it.

gseclecticattic says: 02/09/11 at 19:45:23

I see all of you addressing the checkout for when a buyer purchases from just one seller and pays. I also saw where Critter bought from two different sellers but paid with two different types of payment options.

There’s one other option I haven’t noticed anyone bring up. I know everyone wants a buyer to be brought back to their booth or their attention brought back to that seller’s items after they are done checking out. However what happens in one of these two circumstances.

First off, what if a buyer puts items in their cart from multiple sellers, does the new checkout allow them to make one payment for their purchase and if so which seller is the checkout going to focus on if everyone insists on them being the focus?

Secondly, what happens if a buyer puts multiple items in their cart. They then leave them there for an unspecified period of time. All of a sudden they realize “oh wait, I forgot I need those things” and come back to pay for them. Another instance of ‘which seller gets priority’.

Am I making any sense on this? I think the page a buyer gets taken back to needs a link or something to yes, let them be able to go to the sellers they’ve bought from. BUT, as far as the items shown, it should focus on the types of things that buyer has previously looked at but NOT bought yet. If they’ve already bought it I’m not positive they’re going to want to buy it again unless it’s maybe in a collectible or antique type of category, something like that.

Sorry for this being so long. Again I hope all of this has made sense, sometimes I can think what I want to say but I can’t type it into words.

ilovecrystals says: 02/09/11 at 20:51:35

At least I now have some idea what happened when I tried to buy something last night from a seller here on Bonanza. It would not go through four times, so tried again today and it worked just fine.

EuropeanGoodies says: 02/10/11 at 17:22:45

I agree, the gray ‘delete’ button is good and big enough. Why would we encourage customers to ‘try it out’?
And yes, after empty-ing the cart it should (MUST) go back to the original booth.
Pretty please.
Otherwise, great job!

alexwberg says: 02/10/11 at 23:08:29

Hi everyone – you should now see, for signed out users, that the first row of items in the empty cart is comprised items from the last seller who had an item removed.

Signed in users will see a mix of recently viewed items and items from the last seller who had an item removed. Depending on how which items were viewed and when these too could all be from the same seller.

EclecticStuff says: 02/15/11 at 14:24:00

I’m still getting the green check-marked message up top the Home Page when I log in …that my [phantom] item offers have been sent to the sellers. Been over a week now, I think… it started when this new check-out went live.

ilikebigbags says: 02/15/11 at 20:09:33

I have a buyer who was trying to checkout and wished to use Pay Pal balance plus credit card, but was unable to do that it would only pull $ from her linked bank account This prevented her from checking out and may lose me the sale. Any idea if the new cart has anything to do with this? I’ve made many sales with no problem up until now. I have a Premier Pay Pal account…
