What is this used for?

I cannot figure out what this item is used for. It has a V shaped charm inside and the lid does close with it inside but when the V shape is outside the lid cannot be closed due to the attached chain. Here are a few pictures. It measures 1 1/4″ × 1″ Anyone have any ideas?

I have one just like it, except it has a dragon design on the cover. A friend took it to the Antiques Roadshow and stumped the experts.

Could you post a clear picture of
the inside of the lid?

Because of it’s size It seems to be [URL removed]
1.Snuff Box
2.Pill Box
3.Poison Prayer Box

I am unsure of the significance
of the chain and charm. Can it be removed?
and is there an eye or something where it
could be attached on the exterior?

PART 1
Very interesting.

The box is a fancy carrying case for the the “V”.
But the “V” doesn’t look sharp, but my first thought was

A carrying case for a cigar cutter ??? ( for a gentleman )

OR a fancy bottle opener ???

PART 2
Another thought. (yes, I do have them)
The “Charm” part would be like a “anchor” for over an mirror edge (or ??? edge) and the chain suspense downward leaving the case in a “L” for as a mini shelf (Crown would face down and be the shelf) or and easel for holding something, like in a man’s shaving kit. Maybe holding a small mirror in a man’s shaving kit. (Yes I am crazy) Like holding purse handles or whatever they had in the past time. (please someone figure this one out, I found 2 gray hairs already.)

Part 3 Dec 25
Still based on the above as a “Portable hanger” for ties or a hat.
(4 more gray hairs : ()

It does appear to be a Queen Victoria Snuff Box indeed.
The royal crown emblem is/ was quite common on many various gadgets, etc used by different product makers (unless of course, there is any additional markings, hallmark or even a number) then it can be research by the maker.

Good luck within your further research!

From reading all the comments, I gather that the box can not be closed when the chain is extended outside the box, right? If that’s true, then it seems that it’s main purpose is the keep the chain & V thing inside until it’s needed. But what would you need it for?

Could it be the type of thing used to cut the foil wrapping off of a bottle of wine or champagne?

If it’s a snuff box… I wonder if the V shaped thing might be small enough to pass through a button hole to keep the box from falling out of your hands, if you were to open it to get a pinch of snuff?

Can you tell if the chain & V thing look to be original to the box? Could it be that the V thing held some significance to someone that chose to have it soldered onto a chain & kept in the box?

That’s all I can come up with. Please let us know if you find out what it is.

Here you go rek, hope this gives you a better view. [URL removed] JohnGermaine, I think this piece is Silver Plated. [URL removed] there is nothing on the outside to attach the charm to. The attachment for the chain is a cut-out type loop on the inside of the box. It definitely appears that the chain and charm were meant to be on the inside for some reason. Maybe it is a cigar cutter but the charm has dull edges. Could be a bottle opener? All good guesses and I appreciate all the input. I’m totally lost on this curious piece! Merry Christmas everyone! Booboocat, it looks like the chain a “V” shaped charm are original to the box. The box has a special cut out to accommodate the chain and charm.

Your V shaped charm makes me think of a laurel headdress from Roman/Greek days…. Made of stainless?? Made of silver?? I’ve seen that crown before too and can’t bring to mind where.

[URL removed] I agree that it looks most like the link provided to the Imperial State Crown. But figuring what it’s purpose is, that’s a whole ’nother question. Why a lanyard that ONLY tucks inside??!!

3[URL removed] [URL removed] why would a snuff box need the thingy that is inside? They are usually empty to leave enough space for the snuff, right? Still would like to know what it is made of, silver or stainless??

The square in the center of the crown looks like a Templar Cross. I found a pic of the British Queen wearing a similar Crown. Maybe its some kind of souvenir or award from Britain. Any Brit’s out there, who can help???

Imperial State Crown – [URL removed]

Look like an embossed official emblem used as attestation or evidence of authenticity wax seal stamp, could be King George V because it’s the same design (oats at the bottom) or maybe South Dakota [URL removed]

Maybe it’s the picture but it looks like there is some kind of red (maybe wax) in the little crevasse of the oats!

Well it has me stumped too, I’ve looked all over and found some similar boxes but none that have the chain and charm attached. Seems most metal boxes were used for business cards, matches, or wallets but alas I failed to come up with anything. Will be anxiously waiting for an answer as well.

Now THAT is VERY interesting to be sure. I wonder…since obviously the (Feathered to my eyes ) “V” or “L” for lack of a better term is meant to be inside when carried at least AND to remain ALWAYS with the case that is it possible it (The “V”) may be some sort of Imprint?? I guess what im saying some sort of an official seal type thing pressed into wax maybe that officially identifies the person??

Orrr…is it possible its a portable letter opener that one carries with them? used by sliding that unattacjhed edge of the “V” into the sealed part and pulling it along?

Ehh…more than likely its justa fancy bottle opener :)

It sure is curious looking ill say THAT!

I wonder if it’s a match box holder with the strike plate on a chain or maybe a pipe cleaner?

answered over 13 years ago

I would guess it is a high end pill box…

Looks to be some type of vesta case

It looks like a portable ashtray/purse hook. Perhaps a souvenir from Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in the early 1950’s?

I sent this to a friend in England who is a military, sporting, & antique collector and this is his [URL removed]
“I looked at the metal box on that link and cant help here, I have never seen the like.
The chained charm is the mystery here, I cant think what it could be for.
The box looks slightly military, with the embossed crown, which is by the way a “Queens” crown NOT a Kings crown, so this means made either in the reign of Queen Victoria or our present queen.
I can say with some certainty it is NOT a pill box, snuff box, vesta case, prayer box, cigar cutter, pipe cleaner. bottle opener or a seal. I spend a lot of time in antique shops and am familiar with all these items."

I’m (Abby) wondering if the V be used to hold a fan or gloves, napkin at the table. It also reminds me of a purse hook. Is the box strong enough to hold a metal or beaded bag with a chain handle? I’m thinking of a “necessities”, where a lady held her coins to get home from a party, that had other functions & held other objects. I have some Victorian ones that just held coins that are about that size.
