I do not have enough information on this book and looking on the net was very confusing,as there is no dates for a copyright, could you help me?
The only date I have to go by is the inscription inside the book when it was given to someone as a gift, actually it was given twice with two different dates. One 1897 and again in 1953
Thank you

Hi Noelsnook, could you tell me who the publisher of the book was, how many pages (if numbered) size of book and what the cover looks like. Leather, cloth etc. what color the covering and what color the lettering is on the spine and/or cover. I’m not antiquarian book dealer but I’ve sold a lot of antique books and generally can figure out how old the book is. Chances are the first date of 1897 is going to be close to the publication date.
Edited to add – I see you’ve started a listing so I’ll go take a look.
Edit 2 – what I’ve found is that Fleming Revell was a republisher of religious books that he wanted to bring to North American market starting in the 1870s. Underneath the publisher’s name you’ll see in small letters Religious Tract in England, this was a prior publisher of this book. Pilgrim’s Progress was originally published in 1678.
The date I found most associated with the Fleming Revell name was 1903. Since your book is dated 1897 I can only assume this was perhaps a short-run first printing by this publisher. Maybe based on its success he republished a much larger run in 1903. It looks like it is in quite good condition and it has those nice illustrations. (the other alternative which is probably not likely, is that the date was falsely added to make the book more attractive).

Thank you both so much for your input. I have been looking online and did fine 100s of the same title, but non were the same book I have.
Lynnestreasure, your info is helping alot, I had no clue as to what Religious Tract in England, ment. Also, I could not put together the dates I found online and in book.
Pilgrim’s Progress published in 1678
Fleming Revell 1903
And the date of personal note as gifted from teacher (name) to student (name) 1897
I did make a listing, just to have a way for others to see the book,do not know how to put a pic in this thread.
Thanks again,
