Diamonds & pearls inquiry now completed (thanks)

What has been your best experience when cleaning diamonds, sapphires (or combined gems) with pearls?

I know that cleaning pearls (alone) require a special process but since there are precious gems & diamonds involved, what’s your take on it please?

Hi Monty! Ultrasonic cleaners are useful for jewellery cleaning and removing tarnish.

But if pearls are involved, then you should ……ONLY USE WATER….NO CHEMICALS….If its just diamonds & gemstones then the various chemical solutions are safe. Pearl strands do great in ultrasonics (plain water ONLY)….

They use ultrasound waves and chemicals combined to create bubbles that “cling” to the foreign particles such as dirt, oil, and unknown substances. The high frequency waves are sent out and pull the contaminants off of the object. the bubbles collapse after they attach to the contaminants and move to the surface of the chemical solution creating what appears to be a boiling solution.

You can use a variety of different cleaning products in an ultrasonic cleaner, from regular jewellery cleaner to diluted pine sol (for diamonds ONLY) please remember to rinse your jewellery to remove excess cleaning product, it will eliminate any soap build up left on your jewellery.

Hope this will help you some?

With something this ornate and expensive looking, I’d take it to my jeweler and have him/her check the settings at the same time. Normally when you have the settings checked, they clean it at the same time. It’s been years, but I wouldn’t think of touching it if it belonged to me.

I have ruined so many pearl items I wouldn’t even try to clean it. Maybe a q-tip with cleaner but not even close to any pearls. The skin comes off those so easily. I know there are special cleaners for pearls but I would test that on something I didn’t mind throwing away.

I have had the skins break and peel from using just plain water on older pearls. I wouldn’t try it.

Beautiful Ring Montrose…I have to agree with those who have said to take this to a jeweler for cleaning.
