What do you put in upc for handmade items?

I have some handmade items I would like to list but have no idea what to put for the UPC, MPN, or other item traits. Since I make these myself I have neither of the first two (UPC, MPN.) Any advice or a listing of a handmade item you have that gets google shopping views and don’t mind sharing so I can copy some of the traits would be great.

Thanks,

This is why Bonanza (and one reason Google shopping makes this attribute available to use) will use the identifier [URL removed] attribute for reasons such as yours. Handmade, vintage products over 20 years old originally sold without a UPC and then there are certain types of other products that….

….were not manufactured with a UPC. You would be fine with the identifier exists [URL removed] I would just make sure to add the word handmade to your titles if you are not already doing this :)

The MPN is not required for your handmade products either.

I’m familiar with the Identifier [URL removed] attribute from eCrater. Saw one seller here using Not Applicable, and another using Does Not Apply. I have started using Not Applicable. Not sure if it is best to use something, or leave it blank.

You can purchase UPC codes pretty cheap – I bought a batch of 100 on eBay for under $10. Some sellers will even send you a certificate with your store name on it (digital). It helped me tremendously and I’ll do it again when I run out of those. (Disclosure… No, I do NOT sell UPC codes myself! lol)

Thanks MaydaMart, I bought some online and am giving it a try.

Are they generic UPCs that can be added to ANY type of listings? Are they product specific? Are you using them for handmades?

All my items are handmade. I was told by Bonz support to leave the UPC blank. As for MPN, I set up my own 4 digit codes. I have not had a problem with it since.

Thanks Margiecrafts’ booth, I am also adding a four digit code as you suggested.

I’m just curious, wouldn’t creating your own MPNs be the same as creating your own UPCs. Google does say that for handmade you do not have to use an MPN or UPC.

After reviewing all that I’ve read here, and what I read at Google Merchants’ Center, [URL removed] I choose to leave the spaces blank. In “brand” I always add “handmade.”

Not sure if it is best to use something, or leave them blank. I guess it doesn’t matter. I don’t like blank spaces, because it seems like points are being taken away from my listing because of it.

According to Margiecrafts, Bonz support said to leave the UPC blank, but no mention about what to do with MPN space. She’s creating her own 4-digit codes for that space.

According to EmpressDepot, Google does say that for handmades you do not have to use an MPN or UPC.

Saw one seller here using Does Not Apply. I have started using Not Applicable in both spaces.

I’m familiar with the Identifier [URL removed] attribute from eCrater. Maybe I’ll start using that, since it’s coded correctly for Google.

Hi Sandi. If you decide to use the identifier false attribute…when you do not enter in the UPC, Bonanza will automatically apply the identifier exists false attribute…you can see this in batch edit under search optimize when looking at the populated list of your inventory.

Yes, it sounds like a good final decision, especially seeing as how Google allows this for handmade sellers.

Here is something that might help. It’s a Google site on attributes.

[URL removed]

I could be wrong, but I’m not seeing a reason why handmade sellers cannot add their own MPN….

I feel for handmade sellers as it must be confusing at this point but I definitely admire the talent that goes into your handmade work.

Best of luck.
