1. Also known as sequoia, big tree, and Sierra Redwood

2. Because the species has a restricted natural range, and people love them, most groves of giant sequoia have been accorded protected status

3. Outside its natural range, both in the United States and in many other countries, giant sequoia is highly regarded as an ornamental

4. The giant sequoia was probably discovered in 1833 by the Walker party as they struggled through the Sierra north of the Yosemite valley
