Cajanus cajan

Pigeon Pea

Cajanus cajan can be dated back 3,500 years ago from its origins in Eastern India. The plant's versatile nature allows it to be grown as a perennial shrub, or small tree up to 4 meters tall. The species is characterized by long, slender leaves accented with bright yellow blossoms highlighted with crimson. Extremely drought-resistant once established, Cajanus cajan is well suited for dry, arid climates and temperatures up to 90 degrees F. Growth is slowed when exposed to cooler weather (65 degrees F or lower), so be sure to plant in full sunlight, as this legume is not frost tolerant.
