Watson & The Shark by John Singleton Copley - Art Print

Watson & The Shark; The subject of Watson and the Shark was Sir Brook Watson (1735-1807), a wealthy London merchant and staunch Royalist who had survived (minus his lower right leg) a shark attack while swimming in Havana harbor at the age of 14. The crew depicted in the dinghy may have had Americans in its midst, as the merchant ship from which it was launched hailed from Boston.1778/National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC
