The general officers of the Confederate States Army were the senior military leaders of the Confederacy during the American Civil War of 1861–1865. The southern generals were the commanders that led the troops and made decisions for the South during battles. The Union Army, or Federal Army as it was also known, was the United States Army land force that fought to keep and preserve the Union of the collective states, proving essential in the preserving of the United States of America as a working, viable republic. The northern generals were the commanders that led the troops in the North and helped decide the ultimate outcome of most civil war battles.
