Item description
Baule Maternity Figure Miniature Custom Stand African Art Ivory Coast
A hand-carved wooden fertility figure made by the Baule people of Ivory Coast. The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic groups in the Cรดte d'Ivoire. ? A seated female form with hands to belly in hopes of a happy and healthy pregnancy. Shows signs of wear and age, which is between the end of the 19th to the middle of the twentieth centuries. Please study the photograps for details. This piece is not smooth and rounded as one would expect. This is not the work of a master craftsman; perhaps done by an apprentice.
Most of my African art was acquired from friends who were missionaries on the continent. Each is an authentic piece and likely dates from the mid nineteenth to the mid twentieth century. Also included in my collection are figurative art pieces made for export, commonly called โtourist or airport artโ. These decorative pieces are identified as such. Such pieces are more common and affordable and have done much to preserve and promote African cultural.
Height: 17 inches; Width: 5 inches; Depth: 4 inches. Measurements do not include the custom stand; with the stand the figure is 18.5 inches tall. The figure is on a black stand which in turn is on another. The base of the second (bottom) stand is 8.5 inches in Length x 6 inches. The bottom stand can be easily removed accoding to your preferences.
