Item description
Marshall, John, THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE AMERICAN FORCES, DURING THE WAR WHICH ESTABLISHED INDEPENDENCE OF HIS COUNTRY, AND FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Philadelphia: James Crissy, 1838. 2nd ed. (later printing), 2volumes + atlas, contemporary polished calf leather w/gilt titling on black morocco labels, 8vo (8.25x5.250?), good+/n.a., vol.1, iv, 460pp., 42pp. notes, viii pp. index; vol.2, viii, 448pp., 32pp. notes, v pp. index., atlas, OE leather/mauve paper w/black titled silver paper label affixed to front board, 10 double page hand-colored folding maps, all present.
All three volumes show light-moderate general wear and scuffing to externals of bindings, vol.1 frontis of Washington, as well as adjoining title page, moderately foxed (tissue guard is present), preliminaries lightly foxed, text itself has only light and sporadic scuffing, end-papers suspected of being replaced at some point, with two small glue bleed-throughs and small paper loss in hinge areas of vol.1 only. The atlas is complete and 1st ed., with all 10 fold-out maps present, some bleed through from the original outline painting of the maps onto subsequent pages. Overall, a splendid example of a highly sought-after set of books.
