DENARIUS ~ this is a denarius and not the far more common "double denarius"/antoninianus
Silver Denarius 20mm. 2.45g.
Rome mint. Struck AD 240.
Obverse: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG.
Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian to right.
Reverse: P M TR P III COS P P Gordian III riding on horseback left, raising his right hand addressing troops and holding a scepter in his left hand; chlamys (cloak) billowing behind at shoulder.
Beginning with Gordian III the denarius coin begins to become scarce and is eventually replaced entirely by the much more common antoninianus / double denarius.
