Item description
CIVIL WAR, CONFEDERATE STATES, CS, BROGAN HEEL PLATE, DUG, AGUIA CREEK
This CS brogan iron heel plate and heel was worn on the soldiers brogans or boots. This still has the remnants of several nails. These plates were used to try and sustain the life of the soldier?s shoes, because once they were worn out, they didn?t know how long it would be before they could be replaced. These unique items were not a regulation issue but sold by the camp sutlers. This example was recovered in a Confederate camp in Aquia Creek, Virginia.
Aquia Creek Landing, near the Aquia Church, was an area that had campsites for both Union and Confederate troops. It was also a strategic depot for Federal troops during the War. Through those years, approximately 100,000 troops in blue encamped in Stafford. Like many buildings during the Civil War, Aquia Church was taken over by the military. The Aquia Church grounds were also used as a hospital site during the War. As might be expected, some of these soldiers were buried amongst the parishioners.
