CIRCA 1988, UNITED NATIONS, AFGHANISTAN, UNTSO/UNGOMAP, MEDAL AND RIBBON UN Afghanistan (UNTSO clasp UNGOMAP) Full Size Medal and Ribbon Set up in May 1948, UNTSO was the first ever peacekeeping operation established by the United Nations. Since then, UNTSO military observers have remained in the Middle East to monitor ceasefires, supervise armistice agreements, prevent isolated incidents from escalating and assist other UN peacekeeping operations in the region to fulfil their respective mandates. UNTSO has assisted in various missions including UNDOF, UNIFIL, UNGOMAP, UNIMOG, UNIKOM and UNPROFOR. UNGOMAP was established in May 1988 to assist in ensuring the implementation of the Agreements on the Settlement of the Situation Relating to Afghanistan and in this context to investigate and report possible violations of any of the provisions of the Agreements. Each United Nations medal is identical in design, with a unique ribbon to identify the specific mission. The UNTSO ribbon has a UN blue background with two narrow white stripes. A UNGOMAP clasp is worn on the medal ribbon to indicate this specific mission. Qualifying time for the medal is 6 months of service with UNTSO. Subsequent tours of the same regions would be denoted with a numeral attached to the ribbon. United Nations medals are not engraved.
