Esta moneda conmemorativa alemana, con un valor nominal de 5 Reichsmarks, se emitio en 1929 para celebrar el 200 aniversario del nacimiento de Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781), uno de los escritores, dramaturgos y críticos alemanes mas importantes de la Ilustracion. El anverso presenta su retrato acompañado de la inscripcion "GOTTH". EPHRAIM LESSING" junto con los años 1729 y 1929, simbolizando su vida útil. El reverso muestra el aguila alemana tradicional, junto con la inscripcion "DEUTSCHES REICH - 5 REICHSMARK", confirmando el estado oficial de la moneda.
Lessing fue un pionero de la crítica literaria y un pensador clave de la Ilustracion en Alemania. Sus obras, incluida la famosa obra "Nathan el Sabio", promovieron la tolerancia religiosa y el librepensamiento. Esta moneda representa un artefacto raro de la era de la República de Weimar, una epoca en que Alemania enfrentaba importantes desafíos políticos y economicos. En particular, esta variante se origina en la Casa de la Moneda de Munich (marca D) y no esta acuñada en plata, lo que la distingue de las ediciones estandar de coleccionista.
