Item description
Antique 1802-03 London Sterling Silver Nautilus Cup with Hallmarks once belonging to Richard King (RK) Mellon. Repackaged in a presentation box by The St. James House Company.
Nautilus shell cup with ornate sterling silver mounts, a decorative item inspired by historical "cabinets of curiosities" pieces. The mount features figures, including a central standing figure of a putto, or a mythological figure like Neptune, above a base depicting sea creatures and waves.
Type: Mounted nautilus shell decorative object, often referred to as a nautilus cup or standing cup.
Materials: The main body is a polished natural nautilus shell, a pearled Nautilus pompilius. The base and rim mounts are made of sterling silver, depicting mythological or marine motifs.
Design: The intricate design, which uses natural materials combined with elaborate metalwork, is characteristic of historical pieces that were highly prized in Europe from the 16th century onwards.
Historical Context: Historically, such items were highly valued by wealthy collectors and displayed in Kunstkammern (cabinets of curiosities) as symbols of wealth, global exploration, and natural wonder.
Measures 4 1/4" wide, 2 7/8" deep and 8" tall.
Weighs 6 ounces.
