Item description
Passiflora mollissima, often called the banana passionfruit, is a vigorous, cool-tolerant vine native to the Andean cloud forests, where its long, dangling pink flowers and elongated, yellow, banana-shaped fruits make it one of the more distinctive members of the passionflower clan. The vine scrambles rapidly over trees or trellises with its tendrils, producing softly pubescent, three-lobed leaves that give it a slightly velvety look. Its tubular blossoms—rosy on the outside and pale within—are adapted to hummingbird pollination and hang like lanterns beneath the foliage. The ripe fruits have a tangy, tropical flavor reminiscent of passionfruit crossed with banana, leading to their common name, and are eaten fresh or used in juices and desserts in its native range.
