Vividly than the disasters of the northern land campaigns, just as militant Americans prefer to dwell upon the battle of New Orleans rather than the British capture of Washington. The glory Of those naval Victories fired the country. There were banquets and receptions for returning conquerors, rude pictures of the battles were preserved in mirrors and china, and every poet burst into a poem of triumph. The privateers may have had less glory, but as Mr. Benjamin's chapter suggests, their part was a valiant one. It was reckoned that 1750 British vessels were captured by our little navy and our privateers in the course Of the war, against only 686 American vessels taken by the infinitely superior naval power Of Great Britain. Surely in spite of the explanations of James and other English naval writers, there was abundant justification for pride in these victories Of our hastily built vessels over the Ships Of a nation hitherto invincible at sea - victories won when Nelson's achieve.
