Item description
[Feminism] Wharncliffe,
Lord, ed., THE LETTERS AND WORKS OF LADY MARY WORTLEY MONTAGU, London: Richard
Bentley, 1837. 3vols. complete, 2nd ed. oe morocco/marbled paper
hardcovers, t.e.g., 8vo (8.5x5.5?), very good/n.a., vol.1, 424pp.; vol.2, 425pp.;
vol.3 471pp. All five plates are
present, three of which are the frontis in each book, attractive bindings appear
to be contemporary. Remarkably clean
given their age, showing wear at the head, tail, joints, and corners, joints show
light wear but holding strongly, hinges are solid and tight, marbled end
papers, light soiling and foxing in preliminaries, slight ghosting on title
pages, lacking tissue papers over frontii if ever present. A very good set.
Lady Montagu
was arguably the first large scaled feminist. The wife of the English
Ambassador to Turkey, her writings give insight in detail to the time she spent
in that country in the early 19th century. She, among many other accomplishments,
introduced inoculation (small pox) to the western world. She was quite the lady, and this is quite a
distinctive set of books ? a wonderful sector of Captured Tyme!
