Item description
? Up for sale 2-3 ft. Che Seedless plant, Chinese Mulberry, 1-year-old, Cudrania tricuspidata. Grafted on rootstock Maclura pomifera to avoid root suckering. Zones 6–9. Keep the received plant in grow container throug hthe summer and roots are growing and very fragile to transplant mid summer. Transplantation in open ground will be safe from October to March when plant goes dormant and drop all the leaves. Adopt to the open sun gradually withing few days in the shade as plants are greenhouse grown.
? Variety description: This underappreciated fruit is a relative of mulberry and fig, and is native to central China. In addition to being grown for its fruit, traditionally Che leaves were used as a secondary food source for silkworms. Trees bear a prolific crop of maroon-red, 1/2" fruit. Ripe fruit have a sweet flavor often compared to fig with notes of watermelon.
? We graft our Che onto Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) rootstock so that, as the plant matures, it will develop less of a bush and more of a standard tree form. Presence of a male plant in close proximity will cause fruits to have seeds.
? Site requirements: Full sun location. Che will grow in a range of soil types provided that the roots stay evenly moist throughout the heat of the summer. Deep, well-drained loam is ideal. Size at maturity: 10–30 ft. tall, up to 25 ft. wide, depending on pruning. Keep it pruned for a smaller size. Very fast-growing.
? Hardiness: U.S.D.A. zones 6–9. There are some reports of Che growing in U.S.D.A. zone 5. Cooler climates may have insufficient summer heat to fully ripen the fruit. Pests and diseases: None observed. Birds will eat the fruit if you are late to harvest, and deer may browse both the fruit and foliage. We protect young trees with a circle of wire mesh to keep the deer away.
? I send on Mondays or Wednesdays, with tracking number in the United States. Sent in the container where it grows during the summer; it is recommended to keep it in this container until it is fully dormant before transplanting. Do not disturb the roots while it has leaves on. From October through April (dormancy period), sent with roots wrapped in wet media and plastic, in the box. International mailing is soil-less, with roots wrapped in wet media.
