Item description
Erle Stanley Gardner TLS from Ventura.
This is typed letter signed ?E Gardner,? sent in February 1932 from Ventura, California to what appears to be a rather irritating person that Gardner is being polite to. Gardner repeats a phrase twice about ?getting back on his feet? and being extremely busy. He also signs his name incompletely and slanting downwards. Unusual.
This letter was folded into three parts, typed on watermarked Hampshire bond (see the photograph) and measures 7 inches by 10 inches. It is in excellent condition.
By the time Gardner wrote this letter Perry Mason was formed in Gardner?s mind and on paper using the streets and alleys of Ventura as the backdrop setting in his first three books. This can be checked easily using references in ?The Case of The Velvet Claws? (his first book that introduces the world?s most famous lawyer - who by the way, operates quite differently than seen on the television series) and old street maps of downtown Ventura
This letter was part of The Erle Stanley Gardner Museum we founded in Ventura decades ago. It is quite uncommon to acquire a letter from Gardner from Post Office box ?Y? in Ventura from the 1930?s.
