Incredible handmade diorama confection - I presume this was intended as a wedding cake topper, but perhaps it had another purpose. I've never seen anything quite like it, nor can I find any comparable examples - nothing even close, really. Crafted from iridescent sequins, pearls, and pushpins on a styrofoam core, in the manner of certain mid-century Christmas ornaments. Overall height is about 7 1/2" and it is 5" wide. The hollow center features four scenes, each framed with lace and pearls: a bride groom, the rings, good luck charms, and a bridal party member - presumably the maid of honor, or perhaps mother of the bride. The bride's dress is ivory satin, embellished with beads and lace, with a frothy tulle veil; the groom wears a white dinner jacket. The opposite side features a lady in a claret satin gown, also embellished, with a mop of russet curls (or a lace hat?) and flowers in her arms. The third scene is two rings on a dainty lace-trimmed pillow, with two glittering bells mounted above them. The fourth side holds a silver horseshoe and a white dove. In the center is a garden-like arrangement of artificial flowers, and there are extra little flourishes of tinsel and sprigs throughout. The feet are made of longer pins and pearl beads, and the top is crowned with a fancy satin bow and sprigs of paper gauze greenery.
I'd estimate this dates to the 1960s, perhaps 1970s. I've had this a few years, and if memory serves, I bought it at a secondhand store, so unfortunately I have no provenance for it. This must have taken many hours to construct... and no trivial amount of skill, to say nothing of the supplies. Lace, ribbon, hundreds of sequins, pins, and pearls; the figures, flowers, and foliage... It's a real humdinger!
Condition: the primary flaw is yellowed glue, most noticeably on the bride's bodice and cap, and on the feet. The fact that the maid/mother has flowers makes me wonder whether the bride once held a bouquet, but nothing appears to be missing. The feet are a bit loose, they wobble when lifted, but they are glue to the lace and will not fall off.
