INDIAN WARS, M1873, .45-70 TRAPDOOR, SOCKET BAYONET SCABBARD, NGP ESCUTCHEON Original Indian Wars, US M1873 Socket Bayonet M1873 Scabbard w/Brass NGP Escutcheon. Socket bayonet for the Model 1873 .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor rifle, with fullered triangular blade and steel scabbard. Scabbard with drainage hole, black leather frog with rotating belt loop. The black leather frog is also cast with ?N.G.P.? escutcheon indicating that it was made for the Pennsylvania National Guard. This bayonet has a full-length blade and has the typical "US" stamp on the top flat. The bayonet displays scattered patches of light marks from age. Locking ring rotates as it should. Leather frog remains flexible and all stitching is except for a small tear on the rotating belt loop just above the NGP Escutcheon. Frog displays some wrinkling and surface cracking due to age. There are no other markings on the leather frog. Specifications: Socket: 3? Face flute: 16-5/8" Blade Length: 18" Blade Style: Triangular Overall length: 21? Scabbard Length: 18-3/8" The blade and socket have no rust. The tip of the blade is excellent with no deviation. The steel scabbard has lost most of its original blue finish. The is some wear on the finish and displays minor pitting. One small dent on the backside of the scabbard approx. 5-1/4? up from the tip of the scabbard. This small dent does not interfere with insertion and removal of the blade.
