Item description

It is Finished ? Crucifixion ? 3 sizes ? by James Tissot "It Is Finished"James TissotThis gorgeous painting of the Crucifixion thrilled us when we first saw it. Our suffering Lord, dying on the Cross, is yet surrounded by the majesty of the Old Testament prophets, holding up their scrolls of prophecy as they float around Jesus, of which He is the confirmation and fulfillment. Intensely, radiantly above Jesus are the Hebrew letters of the Tetragrammaton, the profound name of God, resting in the Star of David, proclaiming that Jesus is the Lord God himself, Elohim and Adonai, creator and savior of the world. At his feet are the three Marys- Mary of Cleofas on the left, Mary Magdalena weeping at the cross, her beautiful long hair showing, and Mary his mother, reaching out to Jesus. The Disciple John, in a coat of many colors, is leading Mary away to his home. We've spent a lot of time looking at this painting. The rich and brilliant colors draw us in, and the dramatic, almost cinematic, presentation gives us an emotional depth and connection to the portrayal that most paintings of the crucifixion don't give us. This paining stirs us. It refreshes our wonder and gratitude that the Lord would give his life for us and bring us salvation. James Tissot (1836-1902) was a major French painter with a dreamy, realistic style that was a precursor to Impressionism. He earned a large living painting fashionable scenes, and later in his life painted many wonderful Biblical scenes. This painting was done around 1886-1894, but has a freshness and a contemporary feel to it that could have been done today. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper. 11 5/16 x 7 3/4 in.
