Make sure your stenciling surface is clean and dust free. For 3d stencil effect, simply tape the stencil to the surface with blue painter's tape and trowel the plaster through your stencil. Then lift the stencil, let the fossil dry completely, light sand, and add some antiquing glaze for more dramatic look. To clean the stencil, simply lay it on a flat surface (like a baking tray) and lightly scrub with a dish washing brush under running water. Never let the plaster dry on a stencil, soak it in a tray full of water if you can't clean it immediately.
