The USS Greenling (SS-213) was a Gato-class submarine of the U.S. Navy, commissioned in November 1942, and played a vital role in the Pacific during World War II. Over seven war patrols, Greenling proved highly effective, sinking numerous Japanese vessels?estimated at over 70,000 tons of enemy shipping?and gathering valuable reconnaissance. On her first patrol alone, she sank four ships, establishing her as a formidable presence early in her service. Greenling also performed rescue missions, including saving downed Allied airmen. Like many submarines of her class, she combined stealth, endurance, and firepower, contributing significantly to the U.S. submarine campaign that crippled Japan?s maritime supply lines. After the war, she was used for training purposes before being decommissioned in 1946 and scrapped in 1960.
The Electric Boat Company, founded in 1899 by Isaac Rice, is a pioneering American shipbuilding firm best known for its role in developing submarines for the United States Navy. Originally partnering with inventor John Philip Holland, the company built the Navy?s first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1). Based in Groton, Connecticut, Electric Boat played a critical role in advancing submarine technology throughout the 20th century, from early diesel-powered designs to modern nuclear-powered vessels. Now a division of General Dynamics, it continues to be a leading builder of submarines, including the current Virginia-class and upcoming Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.
