Item description
Helper,
Hinton, Rowan. THE IMPENDING CRISIS OF THE SOUTH: HOW TO MEET IT. New
York: Burdick Brothers, 1857. 1st/1st rare tan decorative
cloth hardcover w/gilt titling and ornate blind stamping to spine and both
boards, 8vo (7.375x4.625?), Good+/n.a., 420pp. Gilt titling on spine has faded,
binding is remarkably intact, tight and clean, light to moderate foxing
throughout, particularly heavy in the preliminaries verso and recto, pastedowns
are somewhat age-toned, else fine.
An amazingly
fascinating account of the ante-bellum slavery situation in the south regarding
the dangers of slavery ? by a man who saw no problem with it. It is chocked
full of statistics regarding the hopeless picture of slavery in the future. A dangerous book indeed ? the south was not
amused. Many were hung, and others
imprisoned, just for possessing this book. Congress would later have a prolonged
fight for days over nothing but its contents. Many if not most historians give
the nod to this rare tome as being the impetus for the American Civil War as
much or even more than Uncle Tom?s Cabin.
Quite the distinctive and rare book indeed in 1st ed. ? a very valuable and cherished sector
of Captured Tyme!
