Obverse: DN VALEN-S PF AVG--Unabridged translation: "Dominus Noster Valens Pius Felix Augustus" (Our Lord Valens pius happy Augustus), Pearl diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right of Valens. Reverse: GLORIA ROMANORVM--Translation: "Glory of the Romans". Emperor in military attire advancing right, dragging captive by hair behind him with right hand, holding labarum in left hand~The labarum was a vexillum (a staffed flag/banner used as a Military Standard) that displayed the "Chi-Rho" symbol ?, a christogram formed from the first two Greek letters of the word "Christ" ? Chi and Rho. It was first used by the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. On the eve of the decisive battle of the Milvian bridge, Constantine was visited by an Angel while he slept which showed him a Christogram (the first two letters of "Christ" in Greek - Chi, Rho) and the Angel thus spoke: "IN HOC SIGNO VICTOR ERIS", meaning in Latin "In this sign [of Christ], you will be the victor."
