This vintage Art Nouveau compact and coin purse set is a stunning piece from the Victorian era. The compact is made of ?solid gold shell? while the miniature coin purse comes with a chain for easy carrying. The set is made by BVE and is an original piece from the United States. Gold Shell is an uncommon but recognized mark for jewelry that is not solid gold. Usually it appears on vintage pieces and is accompanied by a fraction denominating the portion of the piece (by weight) that is gold. In this case there is no fraction so we are left to guess as to content. Solid gold shell was generally a higher content than ?gold filled? jewelry so we used the 1/5 14K gold filled scrap calculator to help with a valuation. We have also been made aware of the rarity of this type of purse which is often seen in sterling silver but very rarely in Solid Gold Shell form.
