Item description

WORKS OF CAPTAIN MARRYAT by Frederick Marryat Peter Fenelon Collier, circa 1900 20 volumes, illustrated Condition: overall Very Good Frederick Marryat was a British naval officer who in 1830 retired for health reasons due to hardships endured at sea and devoted the last 18 years of his life writing stories for both children and adults largely based on his own experiences. Charles Dickens was among the admirers of Marryat's writing. Perhaps his best-known work is his boys' book MASTERMAN READY. Some British publishers put out complete collections of his works, all 100 years ago or more; when found today, these are quite high-priced. This is the only known American edition of his works; other dealers only offer the volumes individually, although Vol. XIX appears to be unavailable anywhere else at time of posting. All volumes are illustrated, with from five to dozens of illustrations per volume, all reproduced from the original editions. Vol. I has a tear halfway down the back hinge; Vol. X has partial loosening of the front hinge; Vol. XIX is torn at the spine bottom. The remaining volumes appear to have no significant defects, only more minor ones, and are graded Very Good to VG+. This is a great opportunity to get uniform editions of all Marryat's works at just $7.50 per volume (with free shipping)
