Item description

Yerby, Frank, THE FOXES OF HARROW, New York: The Dial Press, 1946. 1st ed. blue cloth hardcover w/gilt titling to spine, decorative pictorial end-papers, 8vo (7.875?x5.250?), Very Good+/n.a., no jacket, 408pp. Yerby?s first novel published in 1946. It is a Southern historical romance. It is also the first novel by an African American to sell more than a million copies. In this work he faithfully reproduced many of the genre's most familiar features, with the notable exception of his representation of African-American characters, who bore little resemblance to the "happy darkies" that appeared in such well-known works as Gone With the Wind (1936). That same year he also became the first African American to have a book purchased for screen adaptation by a Hollywood studio, when 20th Century Fox produced the 1947 Oscar-nominated film of the same name starring Rex Harrison and Maureen O'Hara. Note: Cover in photo appears lighter than book, there is no stain on the back cover, photography is somewhat lacking on this one.
