HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
SAVOY - Duchy of Savoy - CHARLES II GOOD
(10/09/1504-08/1553)
Charles II was born October 10, 1486, in Chazey, union of Philip II of Savoy and Claude de Brosse. On the death of his father, November 7, 1497, his older brother became Duke Philibert II. He died September 10, 1504 and Charles II succeeded him. The Bernese, Valais and Fribourg seized a part of Savoy and the whole basin of Geneva became Swiss in 1536. Charles had to fight from 1530 against Francis and lost part of his possessions including Turin. He died at Vercelli in August 1553 when the city was besieged by the troops of Henry II.
