MIZUNO T-Zoid MX-11 5 Iron
MX-11 enables golfers of all skill levels to hit consistent, high, accurate shots.
Mizuno revolutionizes game improvement technology with a club design that combines forgiveness, accuracy, and distance. The new MX-11TM irons feature two-piece T-Zoid Hollow Technology TM construction allowing for a wide sweet spot area and a low, deep center of gravity producing a higher launch and increased distance with every iron. Mizuno technology has never offered more benefits to a golfer than in the MX-11TM, the future of game improvement design.
After years of producing first-rate forged blades and cavity-back irons for better players, Mizuno targets mid- to high handicappers with the oversized, deep-cavity MX-11. But even low handicappers appreciate the MX-11's muscular looks. With its enlarged sweetspot and wide sole, it gives golfers that "can't miss" feeling, which is a plus for all levels.
Feel is a different story. Some like the slightly heavier clubhead sensation; others can't get comfortable with it. Most feel that the MX-11 not only dampens vibration on mis-hits but also dampens feedback on solid shots. This is a problem for better players. Others suggest the limited feel makes controlling greenside shots difficult. Not surprisingly, the one tester who raves about the feel of the MX-11 is right in its mid-handicapper target group.
The MX-11 proves a solid, if unspectacular, performer. None of our testers claim improved distance, but mid- and high handicappers will like knowing that the big sweetspot makes it easy to get the ball airborne and does a good job of forgiving poor contact. Considering the game-improvement features, the easy workability comes as a pleasant surprise to lower handicappers. There are a few comments about the thick sole, which seems unwieldy from poor lies, but in the end, all agree that the MX-11 would be a nice addition to the 14- to 20-handicapper's bag.
History
Mizuno prides itself on having its irons grain flow forged.
Grain Flow Forging allows for an extremely precise head to be crafted after going through multiple forging stages. The method uses the metal?s natural grain to enhance the club?s consistency and durability and Mizuno is the only golf company in the world to arrange and control this flow and passes on a performance benefit to every golfer using their irons.
The first irons that Mizuno grain flow forged were the Pro MT and Pro VS which was in 1986. The company is stern with employees and require an intense training process to be completed before being allowed to work alone crafting their own irons. Employees need to first work 3 years before being allowed onto the Mizuno hammers and a further 5 years under a master operator.
In 1990, Mizuno were the first company in the world to introduce a fully titanium driver being the Ti-110 and Ti-120. In the late 90?s the T-Zoid driver and fairway woods were released and were exceptionally popular around the world. They were unique in color, being bottle green, and were undoubtedly one of the best drivers Mizuno have manufactured relative to its competition.
The MP line of irons dates back to the late 1980?s and there have since been 16 different models launched dating to the most recent MP18 that hit retail shelves in 2017. In 1997, Tiger Woods famously won his first major championship (The Masters) using a set of Mizuno MP29 long irons and MP14 short irons.
In a recent anonymous poll, 90 professional golfers were asked to choose which irons they would use if they weren?t contracted to a manufacturer and an overwhelming 67% of the players chose Mizuno.
Mizuno are best known for their irons and even though other golf equipment segments are good, the irons are where they make their mark. Five models of Mizuno irons won gold in the iron club category of the 2013 Golf Digest Hot List?. Mizuno won the highest number of awards in the category among all golf equipment manufacturers.
In 2016 the JPX 900 Range was launched and was termed by some ?the most beautiful set of irons they?ve ever seen?. Since then the JPX919 range has just been released and has had an instantaneous worldwide reach and engagement. Their irons offer superb feel and performance, hence their famous slogan ?Nothing feels like a Mizuno?.
Review: "These are excellent irons for the mid handicapper. I switched from a set of Pings and added and easy 10 yards to every iron. They set up beautiful, with minimum offset and only a slightly oversized head. They have a nice high trajectory. They are not very workable, but who cares if your shots are going straight. The first day I had them in the bag I hit 14/14 greens in regulation, which was a first for me. They are very affordable too; you can get a good used set for less than $175. I also highly recommend Mizuno HiFli Irons as a good replacement for your hard to hit long irons."
This 5 iron will be a great addition/replacement for many years.
