On proiskhodil iz starinnoj dvorjanskoj familii, obrazovanie poluchil v Voennom inzhenernom uchilische. V 1827 godu postupil poslushnikom v Aleksandro-Svirskij monastyr, zatem v Optinu pustyn. V 1857-m byl rukopolozhen vo episkopa Kavkazskogo i Chernomorskogo. Poslednie gody zhizni provel v Nikolo-Babaevskom monastyre Kostromskoj eparkhii, gde napisal svoi izvestnye bogoslovskie trudy i prodolzhal perepisku s dukhovnymi detmi. V 1988 godu byl kanonizirovan Russkoj pravoslavnoj tserkovju. Trudy svjatitelja vyzyvajut neizmennyj interes u vsekh, kto zadumyvaetsja o voprosakh dukhovnoj zhizni. "Ischite vsjudu Dukha, a ne bukvy", - prizyval on, rassuzhdaja ob istinnoj religioznosti i vere. V sbornik voshli raboty "Slovo o cheloveke", "Ponjatie o eresi i raskole", "O chudesakh i znamenijakh", a takzhe rjad pisem svjatitelja, posvjaschennykh buduschemu Rossii.
