? Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum)
Live Plant – Sweet Black Variety – 4" Pot – Edible Cane Tree
? Plant Overview:
Appearance:
Tall, grass-like plant with thick, jointed stalks that are purple-black (in the black/sweet varieties).
Grows in clumps or clusters as the canes shoot upward.
Canes are juicy and sweet—commonly chewed or juiced.
Leaves are long, blade-like, and give a tropical garden vibe.
Mature Size (Outdoors):
Typically grows 6–12 feet tall and 2–4 feet wide.
In a container, growth is more limited—expect around 4–6 feet if potted.
?? Care Guide:
Light:
Loves full sun—at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best growth and sweetness.
Can tolerate partial shade, but the stalks may grow thinner and less sweet.
Water:
Sugarcane is thirsty, especially when actively growing.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy—do not let it dry out completely.
In summer, you may need to water daily if it’s hot and the pot is small.
Soil:
Prefers rich, well-draining soil.
Add compost or organic matter to keep it fertile.
A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5) is ideal.
Humidity Temperature:
Sugarcane is a tropical/subtropical plant, so it loves heat and humidity.
Best in zones 8–11. In cooler zones, grow in pots and bring indoors or overwinter in a greenhouse.
Minimum temperature: 50F (10C) — it can’t handle frost!
