Item description
#MEIAZKA
Name: Florence Fennel
Scientific Name: Foeniculum vulgare
Family: Apiaceae
Florence fennel is smaller than its wild counterpart, yet still contains that mild anise-like flavor only sweeter and more aromatic. Just about every part of the plant can be enjoyed or uséd in the kitchen, including the bulb that forms at the base. The stalks can be uséd as celery substitute, and even the seeds can be uséd to flavor meats or teas. Fennel is also enjoyed and uséd as a host plant for black swallowtail butterflies.
Origination: Mediterranean
Historic Uses: Culinary
Height: 30” (75cm)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 4-9
Flower Color: Yellow
Maturity: 60-90 Days
Growing Instructions:
Full/Part sun, Moderate water
Plant after the threat of frost has passed. If transplanting outside, be sure to acclimate the plants if you choose a full sun location. Well-draining soil is a must, it grows best in a full or part sun location.
Harvest before plant blooms to keep bulb from becoming tough. Individual plants should be spaced about 12” (30cm) apart.
