The son of working-class parents of Texas German descent, he had very little opportunity to study art in any formal setting in his youth. Despite limited opportunities for a formal art education, he cultivated a simple, unadorned artistic style that is recognizably his on his adventures by foot through the Texas Hill Country. Once he had become an accomplished sketch artist working mainly in ink, Beckendorf secured a position where he developed illustrated training manuals for the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his service, he attended the MFA program at Corpus Christi and became a commercial artist. While commercial endeavors paid the bills, Beckendorf never lost his early affection for painting nature and landscapes. Working on watercolor projects on the side, he built up a substantial collection that attracted buyers from all over the world.
