Item description
This vintage postcard features the Marx-Engels-Brรผcke, also known as the Palace Bridge, spanning the Spree River in Berlin's Mitte district. Designed by renowned architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the bridge was constructed between 1821 and 1824, replacing an earlier wooden structure. It served as a prominent crossing connecting the Unter den Linden boulevard to Museum Island and the City Palace. The bridge is adorned with eight neoclassical marble statues depicting heroic themes, crafted between 1845 and 1857. During the era of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the bridge was renamed Marx-Engels-Brรผcke in honor of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Following German reunification, the original name, Schlossbrรผcke, was restored in 1991. This postcard captures the architectural elegance and historical significance of one of Berlin's most iconic bridges.
