About the artist -Mirinho
"I was born in Belo Jardim, Pernambuco, in the northeast of Brazil, in 1943. I used to work on a farm and, while I planted and harvested, I would observe the landscape and the birds, both of which I would draw afterwards. I often visited the art fairs in the city, where I became enchanted by the paintings displayed there. I wanted to be one of those artists.
"When I was 21 years old, I began to paint, encouraged by Jose Valentim, an artist of Belo Jardim who lived in Rio de Janeiro. He was visiting his family in my city when we met. Our contact was brief, but it marked the beginning of my career.
"Soon after that meeting, in 1965, I moved with my wife to Rio de Janeiro. I worked as a housepainter, and I didn't have time to dedicate myself to my canvases. It was in 1983 that I finally made contact with a few artists who encouraged me to return to my artwork. That same year I began to show my work in the Art Fair of Ipanema. In 1998 I set up my studio, where I work on my pieces and give painting lessons.
"I have done many expositions, but having my name included in the Dictionary of Painters of Brazil, by Joao Medeiros, is an honor that represents my consecration as a fine artist.
"I define my style as classical figurative, though sometimes it enters into the realm of Impressionism, as well. The themes of my work revolve around childhood memories: birds, landscapes, and harvests. Generally I work from memory, but occasionally I refer to photos to recreate landscapes and other visual information. My wife has been the greatest source of inspiration in my life, and today even she dabbles a bit in painting. We have three children, two of whom also paint, which makes me very proud.
"I have been with Novica since the opening of its Brazil office. On the site I can show my work to the world, and an infinite number of people have the opportunity to meet me and see my paintings. This chance represents a lot to a self-taught artist from the interior of the northeast, who has worked hard in the fields and as a housepainter before achieving his dream of living through art."
"The themes of my work revolve around childhood memories: birds, 'Harvesters of Wheat'
Bending over fields of golden grain, anonymous harvesters toil in the Brazilian sunshine where ripe heads of grain ripple gently in the breeze. Mirinho selects a golden palette to portray a yearly sight in the countryside. "All of us must earn our daily bread, but these workers do so literally," the artist confides. "This work is a metaphor for each one's tasks and how much we need each other to reap the sublime fruits of our efforts. The golden wheat field symbolizes both prosperity and fertility." Titled "Colhedores de Trigo" in Portuguese.
