While the previous two years' commemorative issues only included silver dollar issues, this program authorized not only silver dollars, but $5 gold pieces and clad half dollars as well. The Act authorized the mintage of up to 750,000 half dollars, 500,000 silver dollars, and 100,000 $5 gold pieces. Surcharges of $5, $10, and $35 per coin were added to each issue, respectively. These surcharges helped raise over $3 million for the construction of the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.
