The
United States Army Commemorative Coin Act of 2008 authorized the
mintage of commemorative coins celebrating the founding of the Army in
1775. While the previous two years' commemorative issues only included
silver dollar issues, this program authorized not only silver dollars,
but $5 gold pieces and clad half dollars as well.
The Act
authorized the mintage of up to 750,000 half dollars, 500,000 silver
dollars, and 100,000 $5 gold pieces. Surcharges of $5, $10, and $35 per
coin were added to each issue, respectively. These surcharges helped
raise over $3 million for the construction of the National Museum of the
United States Army at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, just outside of
Washington, D.C.
