Item description
Popis produktu:
This highly detailed piece pays tribute to one of the most historically resonant coins of ancient Rome ? the famed "EID MAR" denarius. The reverse of the piece displays the iconic image of two daggers flanking a pileus (freedom cap), a bold symbol minted by Brutus himself to commemorate the assassination of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March, 44 BCE. This imagery boldly celebrated Caesar?s death as the act that liberated the Roman Republic from tyranny, a sentiment expressed through the pileus ? traditionally awarded to freed slaves. The inscription "EID·MAR" (Eidibus Martiis ? Ides of March) makes this design one of the only Roman coins to directly celebrate a political assassination. On the obverse, we find a right-facing portrait of Marcus Junius Brutus, bearing the inscription "BRVT IMP L PLAET CEST", referencing Brutus? title as Imperator and his association with moneyer Lucius Plaetorius Cestianus. The stark realism of the portrait underscores Brutus' gravitas and his claim to moral authority. This modern reissue, while not an original ancient strike, captures the full ideological and historical weight of the coinage that once circulated in the aftermath of Rome?s most famous political rupture. An essential collector?s item for those with an interest in the turbulent twilight of the Roman Republic.
