His early adolescent works were carved portraits of wood and stone. He then became inspired by organic shapes and the environment. He was influenced by Brunelleschi, Alberti, and Michelangelo while honing his craft in Florence. Deredia?s main inspiration comes from the stone spheres of the Diquis people, an ancient civilization that lived in the south of Costa Rica up until the arrival of Columbus. Deredia has executed many large public works, and he was the first non-European in the new Millennium to be commissioned for a sculpture in St. Peter?s Basilica in the Vatican.
