Item description

Vintage orignal 11 x 14 in. US lobby card from the 1950s drama/romance, SVENGALI, released in 1954 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and directed by Noel Langley, in which a genius who hypnotizes an artist's model into becoming a great concert singer and how she escapes from his influence only by his death. As indicated in the center of the bottom border, this is lobby card #2 from the set of 8 cards. The image depicts artists' model Trilby (Hildegarde Neff) posing in a Parisian studio as she is painted by several male artists. It is in fine- condition as shown with a Canadian censor stamp in the background. Robert Newton was originally hired to play Svengali with a specific clause in the contract about the actor's drinking, but after a few days of shooting, his erratic behavior resulted in his being replaced by Donald Wolfit. Newton fled to Australia, where he filmed The Adventures of Long John Silver (1955). After he returned, he found himself facing a $375,000 breach of contract suit from the producers.
