Of course you do not have to insert it the full 7mm intot he gap, but would then need to secure it from sliding in. If your outer trace is a ground and it is OK for the rail to be grounded that will work OK too. For low voltage applications, you may also be able to fit in a thin insulating tape to isolate an edge trace from the rail These are new surplus, but are repurposed from a larger assembly, so some may have scratches from the disassembly process. If it matters, ask first and we can pick out non scratched or least scratched ones.
