Item description
Popis produktu:
This historically charged piece represents a counterstamped coin from 1808, a year marked by the eruption of the Spanish War of Independence against Napoleonic rule. The inscription ?GNA 1808 UN DURO? boldly engraved within a stylized cap evokes the sentiment of resistance in Gerona (GNA), a Catalan city that played a pivotal role during the Peninsular War. The phrase ?UN DURO? denotes the denomination?one duro, equivalent to 8 reales?while the year 1808 and the domed punch shape symbolically reference both local sovereignty and civil defiance. On the reverse, the counterstamp ?FER VII? reaffirms allegiance to King Ferdinand VII, despite his exile and the imposition of Joseph Bonaparte as monarch by the French. These patriotic countermarks were applied to circulating Spanish coins by regional juntas and militias as a form of political and economic protest, asserting loyalty to the legitimate Bourbon king. This piece is a modern reproduction (novod?l) of one of the rarest forms of guerrilla coinage in European history, ideal for collectors with an interest in Napoleonic conflicts, Spanish numismatics, and anti-imperial iconography.
