Additional Information Produced by one of the pioneers of nineteenth-century cartography, Albert Ruger, this stunning depiction of Halifax shows the iconic city in a period of significant growth, transformation, and development. Ruger was an early adopter of the birds-eye perspective style and helped create the unique aesthetic that is immediately recognizable and creates an indelible bond between the past and present for the viewer. Not only was Ruger involved with the expansion of this style, but he was also one of the most prolific birds-eye perspective illustrators, and his works are considered among the best examples of these depictions. Because they were produced to promote a city's notable civic and geographic features and were not drawn to scale, these artists were given greater freedom to express the regions' distinct characteristics and progression throughout the late nineteenth century. As the Capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax is centered around the harbor and has had a significant presence in Atlantic Canada since its establishment in 1749. By the time of this publication in the 1870s, the city was experiencing a period of considerable prosperity and expansion as immigrants flocked to the region for work in the fishing, mining, and logging industries. The establishment of Halifax led to the outbreak of Father le Loutre's War which began when Edward Cornwallis arrived from Britain with nearly twelve hundred settlers to claim the region for the Crown. This detailed depiction is truly an authentic piece of Canadian cartographical history by one of the masters of the style. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
