Item description
Large ladle made by George Maudsley Jackson in 1895. Heavy at 10.3 ozt and incredibly well balanced.
Crest is a cock?s head and corresponds to the family crest of the surname READY. Sourced (via help from a member of a vintage silver group) from:
Fairbairns Book Of Crests Of The Families Of Great Britain And Ireland Vol 1, by James Fairbairn, 1905 gives only one possible match for "A cock's head couped" and that is READY.
Likely a descendant of John Ready (c.?1777 ? 10 July 1845) who was a British Army officer, served as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1824 to 1831 and also as Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man from 1832 to 1845.
Pretty cool to find it in almost new condition 130 years later in a Midwest town in Missouri.
This ladle is 12.5 inches long and weighs a whopping 320 grams. Markings include the lion passant indicating sterling silver content and assayed as such. The leopard head indicates London and the letter ?U? corresponds to the dating chart of London England 1895.
George Maudsley Jackson 1856-1918 was most well known for his high end Victorian Silver pieces. Truly a desirable museum quality item to add to a collection.
