Additional Information
Major Albert J. Myer established the United States Army Signal Corps (USASC) in 1860, and the branch quickly became instrumental in the Union?s victory over Confederate forces during the American Civil War. Since its founding, the Signal Corps has been pivotal in identifying and implementing new technologies, leading to advancements in military intelligence, aviation development, and weather forecasting. As technology has evolved, the USASC has remained a vital component of the U.S. Army, providing leadership with critical tools for strategy development and maintaining the military?s strong global presence.
Photographed here in 1909, the U.S. Army Signal Corps is shown demonstrating daytime signaling methods using flags, while small torches were employed for night operations. The Corps' first active use of visual signaling occurred during an expedition against a group of Navajo in New Mexico. Early on, Myer had to rely on detailed personnel for communications, but he successfully lobbied Congress to establish a dedicated Signal Corps in 1863, which grew to include nearly 3,000 officers and enlisted soldiers. In 1867, the Corps was tasked with completing a transnational network of electric telegraph lines, further solidifying its importance.
By the time of this 1909 photograph, the Signal Corps had expanded its capabilities, establishing an aeronautical division, and in 1908, the Wright Brothers conducted the first test flights that met Signal Corps specifications. This image captures an important chapter in the evolution of the USASC, highlighting its enduring role in advancing military communication technologies.
